> Door Alarm System
Summary: The first ever alarm system was a straightforward device consisting only of a power, a solenoid gong to serve as the alarm and the trigger
The first ever alarm system was a burglar alarm. This door alarm system was a straightforward device; the circuit consists only of a power, a solenoid gong to serve as the alarm, the switch or the trigger. In an era where inventions and discoveries are taking place one after the other, the alarm system was surprisingly received warmly, even though major inventions such as the telephone did also take place.
Though Edwin Holmes door alarm system is somewhat primitive compared with todays technology, it is still surprisingly effective. The design flaws of the door alarm system make it a bit unreliable but if you are interested, read on as I detail how to put together your own door alarm system.
Note that this little DIY (do-it-yourself) exercise needs elementary electricity skill. You should know also the dangers of naked lines and electrical hazards. So without further ado
Choose a switch. The suitable one is a press switch. To help you illustrate, study the door switch of a refrigerator. When you open the door, the light goes on, right. The circuit we are going to make is exactly the same, except our resistor wont be a light bulb but instead a buzzer. So choose a press switch that completes the circuit when the button is released. If your not sure, ask the help of the proprietor of the hardware store.
Now choose a buzzer. The buzzer is purely your choice. It could be a standard BUZZ or a subtle Ding-Dong as long as it is loud enough to be heard for it to be useful.
Now, choose another switch. This switch is used in setting the device on. Because without it, your door will constantly alarm whenever somebody passes through the door.
Connect the circuit. Start first by choosing a spot for the buzzer. The best place for you to place the buzzer would be in the stairs area or the junction of two rooms (if its a one story house). Attach the trigger switch to the doorframe, basically just like the refrigerator device. In most cases you have to extract a piece of the wood to have a place for your switch. Close the circuit by attaching to a power supply. Remember to turn off the power before working. Attach first the wire to the alarm, then to the trigger switch then to the control on-off switch then lastly to the buzzer. Attach the circuit to the power lastly. Check the connection, if you have a tester its time to use it now. Check everything thoroughly before putting the power back on.
When activated the door alarm system will buzz every time the door is open. Now you see the flaw. It only takes the intruder to close the door for the alarm to silence. But still, in most cases. The alarm should jolt everyone to wakefulness.
Fire Alarm Systems
Many people are hurt, lost their possessions and die because of fire. Although fire can easily be prevented it is one of the leading causes of injury at home in the United States. In some cases where individuals die of fire, it is because they were not aware that their house or the building that they are on is on fire.
Fire alarm systems warn people of a potential fire. It warns the occupant while the still have time to either put out the fire or evacuate to safety. Most of todays fire alarm systems automatically call or notify the nearest fire department so that the fire will not spread out of control.
Fire alarms are either set off manually or by heat detectors or smoke detectors. Fire alarms are most of the time set to detect levels of heat or smoke which usually is an indication of fire. And some fire alarm systems have blinking or flashing lights for those who have hearing impairment. With todays technology, fire alarm systems can now be integrated with the home security alarm system for the utmost protection and safeguard of your home.
Smoke detectors is part of the fire alarm system, it detects smoke in the air and sets off an alarm thus alerting those nearby for a possible fire. Most smoke detectors detect smoke nowadays either by ionization or optical detection and some smoke detectors have carbon monoxide detectors that detect carbon monoxide by which also prevents carbon monoxide poisoning. The optical detector in smoke detectors is a light sensor which uses a beam like laser. These beam sensors then sends a laser like beam to other sensors, if smoke is non-existent, the laser like beam passes through the optical chamber of the light sensor in a straight line. If smoke is present, the laser like beam is scattered by the smoke particles as it enters the light sensor and the scattered light then triggers the alarm of the smoke alarm.
Ionization detectors are much cheaper than light detectors, although these types of smoke detectors are discouraged from being used because of environmental reasons. Ionization detectors work by detecting particles of smoke by a small amount of radioactive americium-241 (that is why it is discouraged from being used). This radiation of this material passes through an ionization chamber. This chamber permits the steady flow of current of electrodes, so that when smoke particles enter this chamber it interrupts the flow thus setting the alarm off.
Some fire alarm systems have sprinkler system that will contain or put off the fire before it becomes uncontrollable. However the only way to prevent fire is to take steps to be careful and take additional preventive measures.
Home Alarm Systems
Installing home alarm systems is another means of protecting your possessions that you value and the people you love the most at home. Alarm systems are very much popular nowadays. Todays Alarm systems range from wired home alarm systems to wireless alarm systems, from do-it-yourself alarm systems to a more sophisticated and highly advanced alarm systems.
Home alarm systems prevent any burglar attempts in your home or fires. In most alarm systems (especially the more advanced ones), the control box of the system activates a loud noise (most of the time a siren), flashing lights and an auto dialer that automatically dials an emergency number (like 9-1-1). This alerts the owners or the occupant of the house and the police that an intruder or intruders have or has broken into the house or alerts the occupant or the fire department that the house is on fire. An auto dialer calls the police or fire department or an emergency number play then plays a recorded message which gives away the address of the house. Some auto dialer calls the security company that installed the alarm system and then the security company will then call the police or fire department or an emergency number and relay the information them. Some auto dialer even calls the cellular phone of the owner of the house if the owner is away on vacation or at work.
Some sophisticated home alarm systems have motion detectors and heat sensors that detect movement and body heat or heat changes inside and outside of the house. The motion sensors detect the opening of doors and windows or any movement inside of the house. If the motion sensors detect any movement inside the house or if the windows or doors are opened without disarming the system, the system will eventually trigger the alarm which usually is a loud noise and flashing lights.
Some home alarm systems have a close circuit cameras that observe the insides and outsides of the house. Close circuit cameras act as a visual surveillance system of the house. Close circuit cameras capture images of burglars or any individuals who are within its parameters.
For those who want to install home alarm systems in their house, always choose an effective home alarm system or if you want to employ experts or a security company to install an alarm system in your house, always make sure that that company can be trusted and delivers what they promise. Make sure that the installation does not involve third parties. Read and review the contract agreement carefully before signing and know what is included in the warranty and its period. Lastly, dont hesitate to ask questions, especially tough ones. After all its your home that you want to be protected.
